Questions

Can I take my own passport photo at home?

Yes. The State Department lists a friend or family member as one of the ways to get your photo. It has to meet the rules: plain white or off-white background, even light with no shadows, facing the camera, no glasses, taken in the last 6 months. PicPassed checks your photo before you pay.

What size is a U.S. passport photo?

2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm). Your head must measure 1 to 1⅜ inches from the bottom of your chin to the top of your head.

Can I wear glasses in my passport photo?

No. Take off eyeglasses, sunglasses and tinted glasses, and don't rest them on your head. If you cannot remove your glasses for medical reasons, include a signed note from your doctor with your application.

Can I smile in my passport photo?

A little, but not with your teeth showing. The State Department says you can smile as long as your eyes are open and your mouth is closed. Avoid big or exaggerated expressions.

Do you edit or retouch my photo?

No. The U.S. Department of State says not to change your photo with software, apps, filters or artificial intelligence. We only check your photo and crop it to the official size. We never smooth skin, change the background or alter your face.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Your photo is checked and prepared on your own phone or computer. It is never uploaded to our servers.

How do I print it at CVS, Walgreens or Walmart?

Download the 4×6 print sheet and order it as a normal 4×6 photo print (choose "actual size"). Each sheet has two 2×2 inch photos to cut out. The State Department asks for matte or glossy photo paper.
