U.S. passport photo requirements

The rules below apply to U.S. passports, passport renewals, green card (USCIS) photos and U.S. visas.

Size	2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm)
Head size	1 to 1⅜ inches from chin to top of head
Eye height	1⅛ to 1⅜ inches from the bottom of the photo
Background	Plain white or off-white, no shadows
Expression	Neutral face, both eyes open, mouth closed. A closed-mouth smile is fine.
Glasses	Not allowed (take them off)
Editing	Not allowed: no filters, apps or AI changes
Age of photo	Taken in the last 6 months
Digital file (online renewal)	JPG, PNG or HEIC file, 54 KB to 10 MB. Ours is a square 1200×1200 JPG.
Digital file (DS-160)	Square JPEG, 600×600 to 1200×1200 pixels, 240 KB or less
